Problem It Solved
By the mid-1950s the Eames Office had spent a decade proving that molded plywood and fiberglass could make light, inexpensive, stackable seating for schools, offices and waiting rooms. The 670 answered a different brief. Charles Eames described wanting the warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman's mitt, and the chair was conceived as a personal retreat for deep relaxation rather than as a utilitarian seat. The problem was how to obtain that yielding, enveloping comfort without the bulk, weight and concealed construction of a traditional leather club chair. The Eameses' answer inverted the conventional arrangement: instead of a hidden frame wrapped in stuffing, they built three rigid molded shells and hung generously filled cushions on them, so the support and the softness are separate, visible, and each doing only its own job.
Design Decisions
- →Three separate molded plywood shells — headrest, backrest and seat — rather than one continuous form, because a single shell of that size and compound curvature could not be pressed reliably, and three smaller shells also allowed the sitter's back and head to be angled independently.
- →A gap between the shells at each joint, which accommodates the shells' articulation and prevents the pinching a continuous edge would cause, while visually breaking the mass into readable parts.
- →Rubber shock mounts joining the shells to the connecting spine, borrowed from the Eameses' earlier plywood work, because a rigid bolt would concentrate stress and crack the laminate while a flexible mount gives the back a slight, comfortable yield.
- →A fixed, reclined seating angle with a separate ottoman instead of a reclining mechanism, since a mechanism adds cost, hardware and failure points, while two static pieces achieve the posture more simply and more honestly.
- →A five-star cast aluminum base with a swivel for the chair and a static four-star base for the ottoman, so the seated occupant can turn without lifting the chair, while the footrest stays where it is put.
- →Down-and-feather-filled cushions, later with foam, buttoned and zipped onto the shells, because removable cushions can be replaced or reupholstered while the expensive molded shells last decades.
- →Rosewood veneer on the visible outer face — later replaced with sustainably sourced woods such as walnut and santos palisander after rosewood trade restrictions — because the outer surface was treated as the object's public face rather than mere structure.
Technology
The chair rests on plywood molding techniques the Eameses developed during the Second World War, when they produced molded plywood leg splints for the US Navy. That work taught them how to laminate thin veneers with resin adhesives and press them over heated molds into compound curves without splitting — a genuinely hard problem, since wood fibers resist curving in two directions at once. Herman Miller's production added die-cast aluminum bases, chrome plating, and upholstery operations capable of consistent leather work. Assembly was deliberately kept within reach of skilled factory labor rather than fully automated, and the chair has been in continuous production since 1956, with documented changes to shell construction, cushion filling and wood species. Because the parts are discrete and bolted, individual components remain serviceable, which is why sixty-year-old examples are routinely restored rather than discarded.
Social Impact
The 670 arrived on national television — Charles Eames presented it on the Arlene Francis Home show in 1956 — and became one of the first pieces of modern furniture to reach a broad American audience as an aspirational object rather than an avant-garde statement. It helped define the visual language of mid-century professional life, and it has appeared so persistently in films, offices and television sets that it now functions as shorthand for taste and status. That status has a cost. The chair was never inexpensive, which sits awkwardly with the Eameses' stated ambition of the best for the most for the least, and it has generated a vast market in unlicensed reproductions of varying quality. Its original rosewood specification also intersected with tropical hardwood depletion, and the manufacturers' later shift to controlled and alternative species was a direct response to that pressure.
Why It Matters
This is the best available lesson in separating structure from comfort. Rigid shells carry load, soft cushions meet the body, flexible mounts negotiate between them, and every one of those roles is visible. Designers working in any medium can borrow the principle: give each element one job, let the joints between them be explicit, and the whole becomes both legible and repairable. The chair also shows what an office learns over time — the Eameses could only make the 670 because a decade of plywood experiments, and a wartime splint contract, had taught them the limits of the process. Finally, it is an honest case study in trade-offs. The Eameses chose warmth, mass and luxury over the low-cost democratic seating they had pioneered, and the result is both their most admired object and the one hardest to reconcile with their own stated principles.
