Design Movements
Movements are where individual ideas became a shared language — a group of designers, working under the same conditions, reacting against what came before. Each motif below is generated in that movement’s own visual vocabulary.
Arts and Crafts Movement
1860–1910United Kingdom, later United States
Objects should be honestly made by hand, using quality materials and visible craftsmanship, in reaction against the perceived cheapness and excess ornamentation of industrial mass production.
Art Nouveau
1890–1910France, Belgium, and across Europe (with regional variants such as Jugendstil in Germany and Austria)
Design and architecture should embrace flowing, organic lines inspired by nature, rejecting historical revival styles in favor of a distinctly new, unified visual language across all art forms.
Modernism
1900–1970Europe and North America, with worldwide adoption
Design should be reinvented from first principles for an industrial, rational age — form arising from function, material and production rather than from inherited style — an argument broad enough that De Stijl, the Bauhaus, Constructivism, the International Style and Swiss Style are all currents within it.
Constructivism
1915–1937Russia and the Soviet Union
The artist should stop making contemplative art objects and become a constructor of useful things for a new society, building from real materials according to their real properties and putting design to work for collective and political ends.
De Stijl
1917–1931Netherlands
Strip design back to a universal visual language of straight lines, right angles, the three primary colors and the three non-colors, so that art and everyday life share one harmonious order.
Bauhaus
1919–1933Germany (Weimar, then Dessau, then Berlin)
Art, craft, and technology should be unified in design education, with form derived from function and materials, preparing designers to work with, not against, industrial production.
Art Deco

Modernity should look glamorous: Art Deco kept ornament but rebuilt it from streamlined geometry, luxurious materials and machine-age symbolism, offering the excitement of the new without Modernism's refusal of decoration.
Brutalism

Brutalism names two distinct things that share a word and an attitude but not a lineage. In architecture, it describes a postwar approach in which structure, services, and materials are left frankly exposed — most characteristically béton brut, the raw poured concrete that carries the marks of its timber formwork — so that a building declares how it is made rather than concealing it behind cladding. In graphic and web design, the term was revived in the 2010s for interfaces that reject the polished conventions of template-driven design: default system typefaces, undisguised HTML structure, harsh contrast, and visible rawness used as a stance against commercial smoothness. The connecting thread is honesty about the underlying medium and a refusal of decorative reassurance. The disciplines, decades, and economic conditions are otherwise unrelated, and conflating them obscures both.
Swiss Style (International Typographic Style)

Visual communication should be objective, clear, and universally legible, achieved through grid-based layouts, sans-serif typography, and a strong emphasis on whitespace and hierarchy over decoration.
Generative Design

In generative design the designer authors a process rather than an outcome. Instead of drawing a final composition, the designer specifies rules, parameters, constraints, and sources of variation, then runs that system to produce results — often many results, sometimes thousands — and exercises judgment by editing the rules and selecting from what emerges. Authorship does not disappear; it relocates. The decisions that matter become which variables to expose, which to fix, what counts as a valid solution, and where randomness enters. This is a genuine shift in the designer's position, from making each artifact to defining the space of possible artifacts, and it changes what expertise looks like: reading system behavior, diagnosing why a rule produces an unwanted result, and knowing when a generated option is merely novel rather than good.
Minimalism

Remove everything that is not doing work, so that what remains — proportion, material, space and the single necessary gesture — carries the whole meaning.
Digital Design

Digital design treats the screen not as a substitute page but as a distinct medium with its own properties: it is interactive, addressable pixel by pixel, capable of changing state in response to a person, reproducible at effectively zero marginal cost, and — unlike print — never finished. Work in this tradition is concerned less with composing a fixed artifact than with specifying behavior: what the thing does when touched, how it reports its own state, what happens when the network is slow or the data is missing. The designer's output shifts from a single resolved layout to a set of rules and components that will resolve differently on a phone, a laptop, or a screen reader. Typography, grid, hierarchy, and contrast all carry over from print, but they must survive conditions the print designer never had to anticipate.
Postmodernism in Design

Design should embrace playfulness, historical reference, ornament, and irony, rejecting modernism's claim that a single rational, universal style was the only valid approach to design.
Memphis
1981–1987Milan, Italy
Furniture and objects should communicate, surprise and amuse rather than quietly perform — a deliberate assault on good taste that treated color, pattern and cheap laminate as legitimate design material.
Human Interface Design

Human interface design holds that the interface is not a layer applied to a computer but the place where the computer exists for the person using it, and that it should therefore be designed around human perception, memory, and expectation rather than around the machine's internal structure. Its central commitments are stated plainly in Apple's Human Interface Guidelines: people should be able to see their options and point at them rather than recall and type commands; the same action should produce the same result everywhere; the person, not the software, should initiate action and remain able to reverse it; and the system should behave as though objects on screen persist and have stable properties. The metaphor — desktop, folder, trash — exists to let someone transfer knowledge they already have, and is abandoned the moment it stops helping.
Material Design

Material Design proposes that interface elements should behave like a consistent imagined substance — a material that has surface, occupies a position in depth, and obeys rules about how it can move, split, join, and cast shadow. The metaphor is deliberately not skeuomorphic: nothing pretends to be leather or brushed metal. Instead the material is an abstraction, closer to paper and ink than to any real object, chosen because people already understand how sheets stack, slide, and overlap. From that single conceit the system derives its grammar. Elevation expressed in density-independent pixels produces a predictable shadow. Motion follows physically plausible easing so that a change of state reads as one surface transforming rather than two images swapping. Color, type scale, spacing, and component behavior are then specified numerically so that thousands of independent teams can build recognizably coherent software.
