Problem It Solved

Breuer set out to dismantle the upholstered club armchair — a heavy, expensive, labor-intensive object built from a hidden timber frame, webbing, springs and stuffing, all of it concealed under fabric. That construction was slow, hard to repair, impossible to make cheaply, and, in Bauhaus terms, dishonest about how it was made. The design question was whether the experience of a club chair, meaning a supported back, armrests and a seated posture of some comfort, could be delivered by an open frame carrying only taut membranes where the body actually touches. Doing so would cut material and weight drastically, expose the structure for inspection, and, crucially, make the object suited to machine production rather than craft upholstery. The chair is therefore less a piece of furniture than an argument about what a chair minimally needs to be.

Design Decisions

  • A frame of bent tubular steel, adopted after Breuer studied the handlebars of his Adler bicycle, because drawn steel tube is strong in bending, consistent from the mill, and can be bent cold in continuous runs without joints at the corners.
  • Continuous bent runs with as few joints as possible, since every weld or fitting is a labor cost and a potential failure point; long single-piece elements let the frame be produced from standard stock with simple tooling.
  • Seat, back and arms reduced to stretched membranes — originally fabric, later leather — supported only where the body bears weight, which eliminates the entire hidden substructure of a conventional armchair.
  • The upholstery left visibly suspended in the frame rather than wrapped around it, because the Bauhaus position was that construction should be legible, not hidden under a skin.
  • Nickel-plated, later chrome-plated finish on the tube, chosen both for corrosion resistance in a domestic interior and because the reflective surface makes the frame visually recede, so the chair appears to be floating planes.
  • A composition of intersecting rectangles in three dimensions, which reads as a De Stijl or Constructivist spatial diagram rather than a mass — the chair occupies volume without filling it, letting a small room stay visually open.
  • Dimensional standardization suited to an industrial supplier, because Breuer's ambition was a product that could be ordered from a catalogue rather than commissioned from a workshop.

Technology

The chair depended on a specific industrial capability: seamless drawn steel tubing, developed for bicycles, plumbing and aircraft, together with mandrel bending machines that could form tight radii without kinking the wall. Electroplating gave the corrosion-resistant nickel and later chrome finish. None of this technology was invented for furniture; Breuer's contribution was recognizing that a supply chain built for transport could be redirected into the living room. The early Standard-Möbel production ran into the practical realities of manufacture — tolerances, joint fixings, consistent bends — and the design was refined across editions, with Thonet, already a mass-production furniture company through bentwood, better equipped to make it at volume. The eiserne Möbel, or iron furniture, that followed across 1920s Europe, including Mies van der Rohe's and Mart Stam's cantilevered chairs, all rest on the same tube-bending industry.

Social Impact

The Wassily crystallized the Bauhaus claim that modern life needed objects designed for factories rather than guilds, and it was widely photographed in the interiors that taught Europe what modernism looked like. Its commercial reality was more complicated. Tubular steel furniture was never as cheap as its rhetoric implied, and in practice these chairs sold to an educated, well-off clientele rather than to the workers the movement invoked. The type also generated one of design's defining legal fights: a patent dispute over the cantilevered tubular chair involving Mart Stam, Breuer and Mies van der Rohe ran through German courts and still shapes how authorship in furniture is argued. Under National Socialism the Bauhaus was closed and its designers dispersed, Breuer among them, which carried tubular steel modernism to Britain and the United States and turned a German experiment into an international style.

Why It Matters

The Wassily is the clearest demonstration that a new material does not simply substitute for an old one — it permits a different anatomy. Breuer did not make a wooden chair out of steel; he asked what a chair becomes when the structure can be thin, continuous and open. That question, transposed, is the one every designer faces when a new technology arrives. The chair also rewards study as a lesson in subtraction: identify the surfaces the body actually touches, support those, and delete everything else. And its history is a useful corrective to design mythology. A product conceived as democratic, mass-produced and cheap became a licensed design classic with a premium price and decades of unauthorized copies — a gap between intent and market that recurs constantly in design, and is worth understanding before repeating.
