What Happened? — Problem

Early hominins needed to cut hide and flesh, crush bone for marrow, and process plant material, but had no natural claws or teeth suited to these tasks.

Why Did It Happen? — Innovation

Deliberate percussion knapping of stone — striking one stone against another at a controlled angle to remove flakes and create sharp cutting edges. These Oldowan tools, named after Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania where they were first extensively studied, represent some of the earliest known intentionally shaped tools.

What Changed? — Impact

Stone tools allowed access to new food sources (marrow, tougher plant fiber, butchered meat), which some researchers link to changes in early hominin diet and brain development over subsequent hundreds of thousands of years.

The basic principle of a shaped cutting edge persists in every knife, blade, and cutting tool made today, and stone tool analysis remains a core method in archaeology for dating and understanding early human behavior.
