What Happened? — Problem

Utilities that had built generating stations to sell street lighting and industrial power faced a demand curve that collapsed during the day and in warm months. They needed households to consume electricity around the clock, which meant households needed reasons to want it. Domestic work at the time was physically brutal and largely unmechanized: laundry took a full day of hauling, boiling, and wringing, irons were heated on stoves in rotation, and floors were beaten or swept by hand. Servants had performed much of this labor in middle-class homes, and their numbers were falling as other employment opened. There was no existing category of object that combined a motor or a heating element with an enclosure meant to sit in a kitchen.

Why Did It Happen? — Innovation

Manufacturers began building small motors and resistive elements into cased domestic machines: electric irons and kettles from the 1890s, vacuum cleaners after Hubert Cecil Booth and James Murray Spangler's work around 1901–1907, washing machines, refrigerators, and toasters through the 1910s and 1920s. The crucial change was not the mechanism but the housing. Because the working parts had to be enclosed for safety, the enclosure became an independent design problem with no traditional form to inherit. At AEG in Berlin from 1907, Peter Behrens was engaged to design products, buildings, and printed matter as one coherent programme, producing kettles built from interchangeable bodies, lids, and handles. The role he occupied is widely described as the first corporate industrial design appointment.

What Changed? — Impact

A new category of designed object appeared: the electrical appliance, a thing whose function is invisible and whose form is therefore almost entirely a matter of communication. Designers had to signal what a machine did, where to touch it, and whether it was safe, using nothing but shell, control, and finish. In the United States through the 1930s, consultant designers including Henry Dreyfuss, Raymond Loewy, Norman Bel Geddes, and Lurelle Guild built practices on this work, and streamlined housings in pressed steel, enamel, and molded plastic became the visual signature of modern domestic life. Dreyfuss in particular pushed the field toward measured human factors, work that culminated in his anthropometric publications and established ergonomics as part of the industrial designer's remit.

Design Impact

  • Created the enclosure as a primary design object, where form communicates function that cannot be seen.
  • Made the control interface — switch, dial, indicator light — a routine design problem, the direct ancestor of interface design.
  • Forced systematic attention to human measurement and safety, formalized in Henry Dreyfuss's anthropometric work.
  • Established the consultant industrial designer as a profession retained by manufacturers to differentiate functionally similar goods.
  • Introduced modular product families, as at AEG, where shared components generate a range of variants.
  • Brought the annual restyled model into domestic goods, coupling appearance directly to replacement cycles.

How Did It Affect Society?

Electrification reorganized the household, though not in the way advertising promised. Ruth Schwartz Cowan's research showed that appliances did not reduce total hours of domestic labor for most women in the first half of the twentieth century; standards of cleanliness rose, paid help disappeared, and tasks previously sent out, such as laundry, came back into the home. Housework became more isolated and more individually performed even as each task got easier. Electric light extended usable evening hours and decoupled daily rhythm from daylight. Refrigeration changed diet, shopping frequency, and the economics of food distribution. Appliance ownership also became a visible marker of respectability, so the kitchen turned into a room that made claims about the family living in it.

The Costs

Appliance marketing addressed women almost exclusively and in doing so helped entrench domestic work as a gendered obligation rather than a shared one, while promising liberation it did not deliver. The industry also pioneered planned obsolescence: the Phoebus cartel, formed in 1924 by major lamp manufacturers including Osram, Philips, and General Electric, is the best documented case, agreeing to limit incandescent bulb life to roughly 1,000 hours and fining members whose lamps lasted longer. Annual styling changes borrowed from the automobile industry made working appliances look outdated, and the designer's contribution was often explicitly to accelerate replacement. Electrification arrived unevenly, reaching rural areas in the United States only after the Rural Electrification Administration of 1935 and far later in much of the world. The generating capacity it required was overwhelmingly coal, and refrigerants developed in this period, the chlorofluorocarbons, were later identified as the principal cause of stratospheric ozone depletion.

What Can Designers Learn Today?

This is where designers first had to give form to something with no visible mechanism, and every decision about the shell was a decision about what the user would believe. That problem has only intensified: a smart speaker, a router, or a sensor is almost pure enclosure, and the affordances have to be invented rather than inherited. The period is also the clearest early record of design being paid to shorten product life. Planned obsolescence was not an accident of the market; it was specified, and designers executed it. Anyone now working on hardware, on upgrade prompts, or on features that make an existing version feel inadequate is standing in that same position, and it is worth being explicit about which side of the brief you are on.
