What Happened? — Problem
Computers of the 1950s and 1960s were addressed through punched cards, teletypes and command lines. Using one required knowing in advance what could be said and how to say it exactly; the system displayed no indication of its own capabilities, and an error in syntax produced rejection rather than guidance. This placed computing behind a training barrier that only specialists could cross, and it made the machine's state invisible — a user could not see what files existed, what a program was doing, or what would happen next without asking in the correct formal language. The design problem was to make the state and the possibilities of a system visible, so that a person could act by recognition rather than recall, and could explore without first being taught.
Why Did It Happen? — Innovation
The solution accumulated across institutions rather than arriving with one inventor. In December 1968 Douglas Engelbart and his team at Stanford Research Institute gave a public demonstration in San Francisco, later called the Mother of All Demos, showing a mouse, windows, hypertext links, screen-sharing and collaborative editing in a single live session. Through the 1970s Xerox PARC developed those ideas into a working environment: the Alto from 1973 and the Smalltalk system contributed overlapping windows, icons, pop-up menus, bitmapped displays and what Larry Tesler and colleagues formalized as cut, copy and paste. The Xerox Star of 1981 shipped the desktop metaphor commercially. Apple, whose staff visited PARC in 1979 under a negotiated arrangement, refined and simplified these ideas in the Lisa of 1983 and the Macintosh of 1984, adding the pull-down menu bar, the drag-and-drop trash and consistent application behavior. Attribution here is genuinely distributed; no single person invented the graphical interface.
What Changed? — Impact
The graphical interface moved computing from a specialist instrument to a consumer product, and in doing so created the discipline of interface design. Once a screen could show objects rather than only text, someone had to decide what those objects looked like, how they behaved, what happened on hover and click, and how consistency would be maintained across unrelated programs. Apple's Human Interface Guidelines, published for the Macintosh from the mid-1980s, are among the first widely distributed documents specifying interaction behavior as a design standard, and they established that consistency across applications was a platform responsibility rather than each developer's preference. Direct manipulation — the principle, articulated by Ben Shneiderman in 1983, that users should act on continuously visible objects with reversible actions and immediate feedback — became the dominant model for personal computing and remains the basis of most software interaction today.

How Did It Affect Society?
The graphical interface underpinned the personal computer's entry into offices, schools and homes through the 1980s and 1990s, and with it the desktop publishing and later the web industries. It changed who could use a computer without training, which broadened participation substantially. It also relocated a great deal of clerical labor: typing, layout and filing shifted from specialized staff onto the person doing the primary work, a redistribution rarely discussed at the time. The research environment that produced it was itself unusual — heavily funded by a corporate laboratory and, in Engelbart's case, by US government defense research agencies — and its lessons about long-horizon public and corporate research funding are frequently cited, particularly since Xerox is widely held to have failed to commercialize what PARC produced.
The Costs
The visual interface excluded as well as included. Screen-based, mouse-driven interaction was substantially inaccessible to blind users, and the accessibility layers that eventually addressed it — screen readers interpreting a graphical environment — were retrofitted rather than designed in, a structural disadvantage that persists in software today. Metaphors carried their own costs: the desktop, folder and file model was intuitive for office workers of the period and has grown steadily less meaningful for people whose experience of computing is search-based and cloud-stored. The commercial history was contested, including litigation between Apple, Microsoft and others over interface elements, which raised unresolved questions about whether interaction conventions should be ownable at all. And attribution has been persistently distorted by popular accounts that credit one company or one figure for work done across several institutions over two decades.
What Can Designers Learn Today?
The period is the strongest available argument that interface conventions are invented, contingent and revisable. The folder is not a fact about computers; it is a decision made by specific people in the 1970s for users with filing cabinets. Recognizing that helps a designer evaluate today's conventions — the feed, the card, the hamburger menu, the chat window — as similarly provisional. The history also warns about retrofitted accessibility: a modality assumed at the outset is cheap, and one added later is permanently awkward. Finally, the distributed attribution is worth holding onto. Design history is routinely compressed into founder stories, and the graphical interface, like the web browser and the smartphone, was produced by many people across institutions whose contributions cannot honestly be reduced to one name.
