Cuneiform, developed by the Sumerians, used a reed stylus pressed into wet clay tablets to record wedge-shaped symbols, evolving from simple pictographs representing objects into more abstract signs representing sounds and concepts.

Writing allowed information to be stored and transmitted across time and distance independent of memory, enabling administration, law codes, literature, and long-distance trade record-keeping at a scale not previously possible.
