Definition
Design, at its root, is a survival behavior. Unlike most animals, humans are not physically specialized for any single environment. We have no fur for cold, no claws for hunting, no gills for water, no speed for escape. What we have instead is the capacity to imagine a need before it becomes fatal and to shape available material to meet it. That capacity is what makes design possible. Where a beaver builds one kind of dam by instinct, a human can build a dam, a bridge, a boat or a canal depending on what the situation demands, and can teach the method to someone who never saw the original problem. Design is that flexible, transmissible response to circumstance.
Why It Exists
Every human environment presents a mismatch between our bodies and our surroundings. Stone Age humans could not outrun predators or dig with bare hands, so they knapped flint into blades and axes. As groups grew into villages and then cities, new mismatches appeared that had nothing to do with muscle: between individual memory and the record-keeping that trade requires, between the carrying distance of a human voice and the size of the territory a message had to cross, between one person's judgment and the coordination a crowded road demands. Design exists to close these gaps, generation after generation. Each closure creates a new environment, which in turn produces mismatches no one had before.

History
Archaeological evidence shows deliberate tool-shaping as far back as roughly 2.6 million years ago, in the Oldowan stone tools, long before Homo sapiens existed. The maker of an Oldowan chopper had to select a suitable stone, anticipate how it would fracture, and strike it in a sequence that produced a usable edge. That is planning applied to material. Later Acheulean handaxes show something more striking still: a consistent, symmetrical shape repeated across enormous stretches of time and geography, which implies a shared mental template passed between people. Design behavior, in other words, is not a modern invention layered on top of human nature. It is one of the oldest visible signatures of the human lineage.
In Modern Design
The underlying drive has not changed, only its expression. A modern designer still works by identifying a mismatch — between what a person is trying to do and what the current product, service or system allows — and shaping something that closes it. A UX researcher watching people abandon a checkout form is doing the same fundamental work as a toolmaker watching a hand slip off a stone. What has changed is scale and indirection. The toolmaker tested the tool on their own hand within minutes. The interface designer may affect millions of people they will never meet, which is why modern practice has had to invent research methods, testing, and measurement to substitute for the feedback that direct making once provided.
Real-World Example
Consider eyeglasses. Human vision evolved for a world without fine print, close handwork, or screens. As literacy and detailed craft spread, a great many people found their eyes could not meet the new demands, particularly with age. Spectacles appear in the historical record in Italy in the late thirteenth century, and by the fifteenth century they were being produced and traded in quantity — a direct response to the rise of reading. Every later refinement followed the same logic: temple arms to free the hands, lens grinding to correct specific defects, lightweight frames as materials allowed. Glasses remain one of the most widely used designed objects on earth, and they exist only because a designed technology, writing, outpaced our biology.

It is not a decorative industry that emerged with advertising; it is a continuous behavior with a two-million-year record, and its purpose has always been to make a mismatch smaller. That framing gives you a practical test for any project: name the gap. If you cannot state which human capability is falling short of which demand, you are probably decorating rather than designing. It also explains why design never finishes. Each solution reshapes the environment and produces conditions nobody previously lived in, which is why every generation of designers inherits problems their predecessors created by succeeding.

Then
A toolmaker tested a blade on their own hand within minutes of making it. Feedback was immediate, personal, and unavoidable, and a bad design corrected itself because the maker was also the user and bore the consequences directly.
Now
A designer may specify something used by millions of strangers in conditions they have never experienced. Research, usability testing and analytics exist to replace the direct feedback loop that the workshop provided for free.
Try it yourself
Make a short list of things your body cannot do unaided: see in the dark, remember a long number, carry a heavy load, speak to someone in another city, stay warm outdoors at night. For each item, name a designed object or system that closes that gap. Then choose one and trace it backward. What closed that gap a hundred years ago? A thousand? You will usually find a chain rather than an invention — a sequence of partial answers, each made possible by the materials and knowledge of its moment. That chain is the shape of design history, discovered from your own experience rather than read from a timeline.
