Definition
A serif is the small stroke that finishes the end of a letter's main stem — the little feet on an n, the flare at the top of a T. A serif typeface is one whose letterforms carry them. The serifs are not decoration added to a finished shape; they are part of a coherent system that also governs stroke contrast, the angle of the stress in round letters, the height of the lowercase relative to the capitals, and the shape of the terminals. Because these features move together, serif typefaces are usually grouped into historical classes: humanist or old style, transitional, didone or modern, and slab serif. Each class reflects the tools and printing conditions of its time.
Why It Exists
Serifs were not invented for print. They descend from Roman inscriptional capitals, where a brush laid out the letters before a chisel cut them and the stroke ends were finished cleanly, and from the broad-nibbed pen of medieval scribes, which naturally produced thick and thin strokes and entry and exit marks. When European punchcutters made the first printing types, they imitated the handwriting their readers already trusted. The serif persisted because it did useful work: it defines the baseline sharply, it separates adjacent letters at small sizes, and it gives each letterform a more distinctive silhouette. Those advantages mattered enormously when ink spread on rough handmade paper.

History
Claude Garamond, working in sixteenth-century Paris, cut romans that set the European standard for generations and are still revived today. John Baskerville, printing in Birmingham in the 1750s, pushed contrast higher and serifs finer, which his smoother wove paper and improved presses made possible. Giambattista Bodoni in Parma and the Didot family in Paris took this further around 1800, producing letterforms of extreme contrast that belong to the precision and neoclassicism of their moment. The nineteenth century then brought slab serifs and fat faces, driven by advertising's need for type that could shout from a wall. Each step was a response to what presses, paper and commerce now allowed or demanded.
In Modern Design
Serif typefaces remain the default for extended reading in print, and the long-standing claim that serifs guide the eye along a line is more folklore than settled evidence. What is better supported is familiarity: readers read most comfortably what they read most. On screen, serifs had a genuine technical problem, since fine strokes disappeared at low resolution. Matthew Carter's Georgia, released by Microsoft in 1996, answered this with sturdy serifs, a large lowercase and careful hinting. High-resolution displays have since removed the constraint entirely, and serif faces designed specifically for screens are now common in news and long-form publishing, where they carry an editorial authority sans serifs do not.
Real-World Example
Look at a printed broadsheet newspaper. The body text is almost certainly a serif with a large lowercase, a narrowish width and sturdy, bracketed serifs, designed to survive fast printing on absorbent newsprint at seven or eight points. The headlines may use a different serif entirely, with higher contrast, because at thirty points the printing is more forgiving and the finer strokes read as authority rather than as a smudge. One publication, two serif designs, chosen for two different physical situations. That is the correct way to think about a class of typefaces: not as a mood, but as a set of solutions tuned to particular sizes, materials and reading conditions.

Why it matters
Serif typefaces carry cultural weight because readers have met them in books, newspapers, contracts and constitutions for centuries. That association is a tool. A serif can lend an argument the texture of something considered rather than announced, which is why annual reports, literary publishing and quality journalism reach for them. It also means a serif can be the wrong signal — a startup that wants to read as fast and technical may find a seventeenth-century revival fighting its message. Understanding the classes lets a designer make that judgment deliberately instead of scrolling a menu. It also builds the eye: once you can see stress and contrast, you can see them everywhere.

A serif's exact shape was negotiated with ink spread, paper texture and the size of the punch. Punchcutters made small sizes sturdier and large sizes finer because each size was cut separately, and the type had to survive the press.
Now
A single outline is scaled across every size and rendered on screens of wildly different densities. Variable fonts with an optical-size axis deliberately reintroduce the size-specific adjustments that metal provided by necessity.
Try it yourself
Set the same paragraph three times, once in an old style face, once in a transitional and once in a didone, all at the same size. Print them if you can. Then shrink all three to seven points and look again. Note where the hairlines break up, which version stays even in color, and which one you would trust with two thousand words.
