Definition
Composition is the act of arranging elements within a frame so that they function together. It is the integrating discipline: shape, line, space, color, contrast, scale, hierarchy, balance and rhythm are all raw material, and composition is the decision about how they coexist. Three things define any composition. There is a frame, whether a page, a screen, a billboard or a viewfinder. There is a set of elements with different weights. And there is a set of relationships — alignment, proximity, overlap, proportion — that the arrangement establishes between them. A composition succeeds when a viewer can enter it easily, move through it in a useful order, and leave with the intended understanding.
Why It Exists
Composition exists because elements are never encountered in isolation. A beautifully set headline placed badly communicates less than an ordinary headline placed well, because the viewer processes the whole field before they process any part of it. The Gestalt psychologists made this the center of their work: the perceptual whole is organized by principles of proximity, similarity, continuation, closure and figure-ground, and it is not simply the sum of its components. Composition is the practical use of that finding. It is also what makes design evaluable. You cannot judge whether a color is correct without knowing what surrounds it, and the same is true of size, weight and position.

History
Compositional systems have been codified repeatedly, and it is worth being skeptical about which of those codifications were real. Renaissance painters worked with geometric underdrawing and perspective construction, which is documented in their preparatory work. Manuscript and early book pages used proportional constructions relating the text block to the page, studied in the twentieth century by Jan Tschichold. The rule of thirds entered wide use through nineteenth-century landscape painting advice and later photography. The golden ratio's supposed presence in classical and Renaissance masterpieces, by contrast, is largely a retrospective imposition: the measurements are selectively chosen and the sources are mostly nineteenth and twentieth century enthusiasts rather than the original makers. What survives scrutiny is simpler — consistent proportional relationships produce coherence, whichever ratio is used.
In Modern Design
The most consequential development in modern composition is the grid, formalized by Swiss designers in the 1950s and set out systematically in Josef Müller-Brockmann's Grid Systems in Graphic Design. A grid divides the frame into columns and rows with defined gutters and margins, turning composition from an individual act of judgment into a repeatable system that many people can use consistently. The web then took this further. CSS Grid and Flexbox, widely supported from around 2017, let composition be expressed as rules that resolve differently at different widths, which means a designer now composes a behavior rather than a picture. The open question in every project is where that system should be obeyed and where it should be deliberately broken.
Real-World Example
Consider a single editorial spread in a well-made magazine. The underlying grid might be twelve columns; the image occupies seven of them and bleeds off the top edge, the text occupies four, and one column is left empty to create a wide outer margin. The headline aligns to the top of the image rather than the top of the page, establishing a horizontal line that the caption later picks up. The pull quote breaks the column structure deliberately, and that break reads as confident precisely because everything else obeys the grid. None of these decisions are visible to a reader, who simply experiences the spread as easy and assured. That invisibility is the mark of composition working: the structure is felt rather than seen.

Why it matters
Composition is where the fundamentals stop being separate subjects and become a single skill. It is also the level at which most design problems actually exist. When a layout is not working, the fault is rarely the typeface or the shade of blue; it is that nothing has been established as the entry point, or that four elements are aligned to three different edges, or that the frame is being filled rather than shaped. Learning to diagnose at the compositional level saves enormous amounts of wasted refinement. It also transfers across every medium a designer might work in, because a screen, a poster, a package, a stage and a room are all frames with elements arranged inside them.

A composition was made once for a single fixed frame. A painter, a poster designer or a book compositor could resolve every relationship against known dimensions, and the arrangement they settled on was the arrangement every viewer would see.
Now
Composition is written as rules that resolve differently at every viewport width and on content that does not yet exist. Designers specify columns, constraints and behavior, then verify the result at the extremes rather than composing a single picture.
Try it yourself
Take one fixed set of elements — a headline, a paragraph, an image and a small caption — and produce ten compositions from them without changing the content, the typeface or the colors. Vary only position, size and alignment. Force yourself past the comfortable versions; the first three will be obvious and the last three will teach you something. Then lay all ten out together and ask which one makes you look where you intended first. Finally, overlay a twelve-column grid on your best version and adjust every element to sit on it, and see whether the result improves or loses energy.
