Modernism

Key Idea

Design should be reinvented from first principles for an industrial, rational age — form arising from function, material and production rather than from inherited style — an argument broad enough that De Stijl, the Bauhaus, Constructivism, the International Style and Swiss Style are all currents within it.

Why It Emerged

Modernism is the larger current, not a single school, and its boundaries are genuinely contested: historians variously date its design phase from the 1890s reform movements, from the founding of the Deutscher Werkbund in 1907, or from the postwar avant-gardes of 1917 onward. What unites those accounts is a shared refusal. Nineteenth-century industrial production had inherited historical ornament — Gothic, Renaissance, Rococo — and applied it indiscriminately to machine-made goods. Arts and Crafts diagnosed the resulting incoherence but answered it by retreating toward handwork. Modernism accepted the machine instead and asked what forms honestly belonged to it. Adolf Loos's 1908 lecture Ornament and Crime gave the position its most quotable formulation; Louis Sullivan's earlier maxim that form follows function gave it a slogan. The underlying claim was that a rational method could produce a universal design language.

Technology

Modernism was made possible by a specific industrial inheritance and made a virtue of it. Steel framing and reinforced concrete removed the need for load-bearing masonry, which produced the open plan, the ribbon window and the curtain wall; large-format plate glass made the glazed facade practical. Bent tubular steel, molded plywood, aluminum and later fiberglass and injection-molded plastics gave furniture designers forms unavailable to joinery. Standardized components and assembly-line methods rewarded modular thinking and repeatable details. In graphic design, offset lithography and photographic reproduction freed layout from letterpress constraints and allowed photography to replace illustration as the default evidentiary image. None of this determined the style — Art Deco used much of the same technology to opposite ends — but Modernists argued that these processes had their own logic and that design should express it rather than disguise it.

Social Context

Modernism's confidence came from a period of upheaval that seemed to demand total reconstruction: mass urbanization, two world wars, the collapse of European empires and monarchies, and vast postwar housing shortages. Its practitioners were frequently social reformers, working on workers' housing in Weimar Germany, Red Vienna and postwar Britain, and its institutions were bound up in politics from the start; the Bauhaus was closed under Nazi pressure in 1933, and the emigration of Gropius, Mies, Breuer, Moholy-Nagy and Albers carried the movement to American universities and corporations. There it was substantially depoliticized. MoMA's 1932 exhibition curated by Henry-Russell Hitchcock and Philip Johnson repackaged a social program as the International Style, a formal vocabulary, and by the 1950s it was the preferred language of corporate headquarters rather than social housing.

What It Changed

Modernism reset the default. After it, the burden of proof shifted: ornament had to be justified where previously its absence did. It professionalized design as a discipline with theory, pedagogy and method rather than a trade of pattern books, largely through schools — the Bauhaus, the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm, Chicago's Institute of Design — whose foundational courses still structure design education. It introduced the design system as a concept, first in Behrens's integrated identity for AEG and then in postwar corporate identity manuals. It gave architecture the open plan and the glass tower, furniture the language of laminated and tubular forms, and graphic design the grid. Most durably, it established that a designer's job is to analyze a problem and derive a form, not to select a historical style.

Legacy

Modernism no longer functions as a live movement, but it functions as the baseline that later movements argue with. Postmodernism and Memphis attacked its austerity and its claim to universality; Brutalism pushed its material honesty to a confrontational extreme; Swiss Style systematized its graphic principles; Minimalism distilled them further. Critics from Jane Jacobs in 1961 to Charles Jencks, who dated Modern architecture's death to the 1972 demolition of the Pruitt-Igoe housing project, exposed what universal solutions cost when applied to actual neighborhoods and climates. Yet its habits are now invisible infrastructure: grids, sans-serif type, modular components, systematic documentation, the assumption that a product should be legible from its form. Contemporary digital design, from Material Design to Apple's interface guidelines, is substantially a continuation of Modernist method applied to screens.
